What to Wear for Extended Family Pictures in Estes Park | Colorado Lifestyle Photography

One of the biggest questions I get before an extended family photo session is, “What should everyone wear?” And when you’re coordinating three families, grandparents, and kids of all ages, choosing outfits that look great together without being too matchy can feel overwhelming!

This extended family absolutely nailed it for their fall family pictures at Lily Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. With the beautiful mountain backdrop, golden grasses, and soft autumn light, their perfectly coordinated outfits brought everything together.

Choose a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits

The secret to dressing a large group for family pictures is choosing colors that complement each other rather than having everyone wear the same thing.

For this Estes Park extended family session, they went with a gorgeous mix of warm neutrals, earthy greens, creams, soft blues, and subtle rust tones. These colors looked beautiful against the fall landscape at Lily Lake and gave everyone the freedom to wear something that felt like their own style.

I especially loved how they mixed lighter pieces with darker tones. The cream sweaters and white shirts kept everything feeling fresh, while the olive greens, warm browns, and darker pants added depth and balance.

Mix Textures and Styles for a Natural Look

Another thing this family did so well was mixing textures and clothing styles without making the group feel disconnected.

From cozy sweaters and relaxed button-downs to flowing skirts and dresses, everyone looked comfortable while still feeling polished. This is especially important for extended family pictures, where you’re bringing multiple generations together.

You don’t need everyone dressed at the same level of formality, but you do want outfits that feel cohesive. A combination of casual, elevated pieces works beautifully for mountain family pictures.

Keep Patterns Simple and Let the Mountains Shine

When you’re photographing a large group, solid colors and subtle textures photograph beautifully. They allow the focus to stay on the people, their connections, and the incredible scenery around them.

This family kept things simple with mostly solid-colored clothing, which worked perfectly with the mountains and lake behind them. Nothing competed for attention, and everyone looked like they belonged together without looking identical.

Think About the Location and Season

Lily Lake is one of my favorite locations for family pictures in Estes Park, especially in the fall. The mountain views, open meadows, and beautiful natural light make it an incredible backdrop for large family groups.

For fall pictures in Rocky Mountain National Park, I always recommend colors inspired by the landscape: olive green, cream, camel, rust, chocolate brown, and muted blue. These shades complement Colorado’s autumn scenery without blending into the background.

Layers are also a great idea! Estes Park weather can change quickly, especially as the sun starts to disappear behind the mountains.
