How to Plan a Surprise Winter Proposal at Officer’s Gulch
There is a specific kind of magic that happens at Officer’s Gulch once winter hits the mountains. Tucked just off I-70 between Frisco and Copper Mountain, this alpine lake transforms into a pristine, snow-covered wonderland. It is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful places in Colorado to ask the biggest question of your life.
Take Jose and Aliz, for example. Jose brought Aliz all the way from the tropical warmth of Costa Rica for a snowy mountain getaway, and I had the honor of helping him navigate all the logistics for their surprise proposal at the Gulch. From the moment she said “Yes,” the rest of their session was incredibly playful and fun—despite the chilly Colorado air!
If you’re dreaming of a “Yes” surrounded by the snow-capped Tenmile Range, here is everything you need to know to pull off a seamless, stress-free surprise at Officer’s Gulch.
🕒 Timing Your Moment
Officer’s Gulch is a rare gem that works beautifully in both the morning and afternoon, but mountain lighting follows its own rules.
-
Morning Magic: Consider a morning proposal. You’ll often have the entire frozen pond to yourself, providing much more intimacy than a busy Saturday. Keep in mind: because of the high peaks, the sun typically crests the mountains about two hours after true sunrise.
-
The Sunset Glow: The sun “sets” behind the steep mountains to the west much earlier than the weather app says. For example, if true sunset is 5:30 PM, you should plan to propose by 3:30 PM to capture that golden, high-alpine light before the gulch falls into deep shadow.
❄️ The “Cover Story”
Because of its easily accessible location, Officer’s Gulch is the perfect “quick stop” on your way to Vail, Frisco, or Breckenridge.
Pro Tip: I recommend making plans for brunch, drinks, or dinner immediately following the proposal. Not only does this give you a reason to get a little dressed up, but it ensures you have a warm place to celebrate your new fiancé status!
📸 The Logistics: How We’ll Pull It Off
I want this to be as stress-free as possible for you. Here is exactly how I’ll be hiding in plain sight:
-
The Identification: I’ll send you a photo of myself and a description of what I’m wearing that day so you know exactly who to look for.
-
The Setup: I arrive 10–15 minutes early, pretending to be out for a walk, taking in the scenery.
-
The Big Moment: Walk past me with your partner toward the frozen pond and the large rocks. When you feel the moment is right, drop to one knee!
-
The “Slow-Motion” Knee: My biggest advice? Stay down on one knee for as long as possible. It feels like an eternity in the moment, but it gives me the chance to move around and capture every angle of those raw, emotional reactions.
-
The Reveal: Afterward, you can introduce me! We’ll spend the rest of our time exploring the area for portraits and celebrating your engagement.
✨ After the Session
-
The Sneak Peek: I know you’re excited to share the news! I’ll send a “sneak peek” within 24 hours so you can share your engagement with family and friends.
-
The Full Gallery: Your complete, high-resolution gallery will be delivered within 4 weeks. All sessions include all edited images, which you can download, print, and share to your heart’s content.
