Choose complementary colors. You don’t want to match perfectly, but you should choose colors that coordinate well together. Avoid bright neon colors or busy patterns, as they can be distracting in photos. Instead, opt for warm, earthy tones like rust, maroon, navy, and green.

Layer up. The weather in the fall can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to layer up so you can adjust to the temperature. A light sweater or cardigan over a camisole or tank top is a good option for women. Men can wear a button-down shirt with a vest or sweater on top.

Accessorize. The right accessories can add a touch of personality to your outfit.

For women: A dress or skirt with a sweater or cardigan, jeans or chinos with a blouse or sweater, a sweater dress, or a jumpsuit. Choose flowy fabrics, or fabrics that have some texture. I love a dress or skirt that moves when you walk.

For men: A button-down shirt, sweater or henley shirt with jeans or chinos.

For children: A dress or skirt with a sweater or cardigan, jeans or chinos with a shirt or sweater, or a jumper. And don’t forget about shoes! Try to avoid characters or any bright colors on children’s shoes.

I always recommend starting with mom’s outfit first, and then coordinating the rest of the family. No matter what you choose to wear, make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your outfit. This will help you relax and enjoy your family photo session.
