Five weeks ago today, was the last time I picked my kids up from school. Five weeks ago today, was the last time I set foot inside the grocery store. In some ways it feels unbelievable that we have been home for this long, and other ways it feels like we have been doing this for a lifetime. None of this is normal, yet time just keeps moving on. Those first two weeks were the most difficult. Our world changed so quickly, and I consumed more news in those two weeks than I have in my entire life. The uncertainty and anxiety I felt was suffocating. It was hard to think about anything else, let alone get off of the couch.
It took me almost two weeks to pick up my camera at home. And then I noticed that one of Isabella’s teeth was starting to grow in, and I didn’t want to miss out on capturing that gap in her smile before it was too late. Once those adult teeth grow in, their little smiles are never the same. So I picked up my camera and took a picture of her. The next day, I put down my phone and the news, and focused instead on documenting our life at home. And then I gave myself an assignment to get in the frame with both of the kids. We spent an afternoon taking silly pictures on the couch together using a remote timer on my phone. And slowly I began to find hope again documenting these little moments at home.
I don’t pick up my camera every single day, and some days (like today) I still can’t get out of my pajamas. We have had an old mattress in our family room, for I don’t know how many weeks now, and I would not describe my house as the cleanest it has ever been. We’ve experimented with Kool-aid, laughed a little, cried a lot, and had way too much screen time. But we are healthy, and so are our family and friends, and that’s all I can ask for at this point. So here is a glimpse into The First 30 Days in Quarantine…
