Last weekend we packed up the car and headed up to Aspen for the 42nd Annual Snowmass Balloon Festival.  The drive up to Aspen Friday morning was an adventure in itself.  We stopped in Leadville for lunch and to stretch our legs.  Then we drove by Twin Lakes and up Independence Pass.  If you have never driven over Independence Pass, and you are not afraid of heights, it is quite a marvelous view.   Thank goodness my husband was driving, because I was a nervous wreck.  I kept telling the kids to look out the window, but they were more interested in the iPad.  Aside from my fear of heights, it was a pretty spectacular drive.  There were even some pops of color in the mountains.  Some of the aspen leaves have already started to change.  I just love fall!

We had perfect weather for the hot air balloons on both Saturday and Sunday morning.  The Snowmass Balloon Festival is one of the highest-altitude hot air balloon events in the country!  My family has seen the Erie Balloon Festival and Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, but this was unique.  I am not sure if it was the weather or the altitude, but all of the hot air balloons just hovered over the valley instead of flying away.  So we really had great views of the balloons from 7:00AM to 10:00AM.  Bonus, there was a free bouncy house and face painting for the kids in the Snowmass Town Park, too!  This was such a fun and well organized event.  Definitely something to put on your Colorado bucket list of things to do!
