Hayden planned the perfect surprise proposal at the top of Vail Mountain while skiing with his future fiancé , Morrison. With the mountains surrounding them and the excitement of a day on the slopes, the moment felt completely authentic and true to who they are as a couple.
For some of the most panoramic views on the mountain, we chose the top of the Avanti Lift for the proposal location. I arrived first to get into position while Hayden and Morrison rode the chair lift together. When they reached the top, Hayden and Morrison skied over to an area in front of me, popped of their skis for a “selfie,” and then he got down on one knee and asked Morrison to marry him.
The surprise, the joy, and the excitement that followed made it such an incredible moment to capture.
Planning a Skiing Surprise Proposal in Vail
One of the things that made Hayden’s proposal especially thoughtful was how intentionally he planned the flow of the day.
Instead of trying to fit everything into one moment on the mountain, we planned two separate sessions. This allowed the proposal to remain completely authentic during their ski day while also creating time later for engagement photos.
Skiing proposals can take a little extra planning, especially when you’re coordinating timing, location, and keeping the surprise intact. Having photographed proposals in Vail before, I helped Hayden choose between meeting at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola or the top of the Avanti Lift.
He ultimately chose the Avanti Lift because of the incredible landscape views and the smaller crowds compared to the Vail Wedding Deck at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola.
The result was a proposal that felt completely natural while still being beautifully documented.
Engagement Photos at Ford Park in Vail
After the proposal and a celebratory ski run, Hayden and Morrison had time to head back to their room, shower, and change before meeting again later that afternoon.
We met at Ford Park in Vail for their engagement photos, which gave them the opportunity to dress up and celebrate this new chapter together.
Ford Park is one of my favorite engagement photo locations in Vail. The park is often quieter than other locations in the village, and it provides a more intimate setting for engagement pictures, especially on the covered bridge and down by the creek.
Having the engagement session later in the day allowed Hayden and Morrison to slow down and really soak in the excitement of what had just happened while capturing beautiful portraits together.
As a photographer who regularly photographs proposals and engagement sessions in the Vail area, skiing proposals are always some of my favorite moments to document. The energy of the mountains, the excitement of the surprise, and the incredible scenery make these moments unforgettable.
Adding a proposal and engagement video is also such a meaningful way for couples to relive the emotions of the day. When we met again later at Ford Park, Morrison even told me she could barely remember what either of them said during the proposal because she was so surprised and wrapped up in the moment. Capturing both photo and video allows couples to revisit those emotions again and again.
Why Two Sessions Work So Well for Skiing Proposals
One of the biggest advantages of splitting a proposal and engagement session into two parts is that couples get the best of both experiences.
The proposal itself stays spontaneous, emotional, and completely true to the moment. Then later, after celebrating and getting ready, couples can enjoy a relaxed engagement session with portraits they’ll love sharing with family and friends.
For skiing proposals in particular, this approach works especially well because it allows couples to fully enjoy their day on the mountain without worrying about changing outfits or carrying extra gear.
Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal in Vail
Vail is one of the most incredible places to plan a proposal, whether it happens on the ski slopes, in the village, or at one of the many beautiful outdoor locations nearby.
If you’re thinking about proposing while skiing in Vail, working with a photographer who understands the mountain and the timing of ski days can make the experience much smoother and help ensure the moment is documented without interrupting the surprise.
I absolutely love photographing skiing surprise proposals and engagement sessions in Vail, and Hayden and Morrison’s day was such a perfect example of how magical these moments can be.
