There is a reason Sapphire Point Overlook is one of the most iconic spots in Colorado. Perched between Keystone and Breckenridge, it offers a panoramic view of the Tenmile Range and Lake Dillon that feels like standing on the edge of the world. In the winter, the landscape transforms into a quiet, white wonderland—the perfect backdrop for a “Yes.”
Here is everything you need to know about planning your winter proposal at Sapphire Point.
Tips for the Perfect Winter Proposal
1. Timing is Everything (The “Golden Hour”) In the winter, the sun dips behind the mountains earlier than you’d think. To get that soft, romantic glow without the harsh shadows, we usually aim for about an hour before sunset. Keep in mind that Sapphire Point is a popular loop; I’ll help you navigate the trail to find a pocket of privacy where it feels like it’s just the two of you.
2. Dress for the Elements (Style meets Warmth) You want to look your best, but shivering isn’t the best look for photos! I always recommend “Mountain Chic”—think wool coats, stylish boots with good tread (the trail gets icy!), and layers. If your partner is wearing a dress, hidden thermal leggings underneath can be a lifesaver.
3. Have a “Decoy” Reason To keep it a total surprise, tell your partner you’ve heard the views at the overlook are a “must-see” before dinner, or that you want to take a quick scenic photo for the family. This gives you a reason to be dressed up and heading toward the viewpoint without raising any red flags.
How I Capture the Moment
As your photographer, I play the part of a “tourist” or a landscape photographer, blending into the background with my long lens. You won’t even know I’m there until the knee hits the snow. After the big moment and the celebratory hugs, we’ll spend the rest of the time taking some “just engaged” portraits while the adrenaline is high and the light is perfect.
