Some family sessions stay with me long after I put my camera away, and this was one of them.
I met Amber, Luke, Daniel, and Alayna at Sawmill Reservoir in Breckenridge for an evening that felt less like a traditional photo session and more like an adventure together.
Daniel is eight. Alayna is five. And instead of spending the session worrying about perfect poses, clean clothes, or whether everyone was looking at the camera, Amber and Luke gave their kids the freedom to simply be themselves.
They played. They explored. They got dirty and messy. They laughed, moved, and leaned fully into the beautiful chaos of childhood.
And it lit my soul on fire.
Capturing Childhood the Way It Really Feels
Childhood is not perfectly posed.
It is loud, unpredictable, affectionate, muddy, hilarious, and occasionally a little chaotic. It is scraped knees and tangled hair. It is tiny hands reaching for yours and children who rarely stay in one place for long.
And it passes so quickly.
Someday, Amber and Luke will look at these photographs and remember more than what their family looked like during this season. They will remember what it felt like to have an eight-year-old Daniel and a five-year-old Alayna.
The energy. The personalities. The relationships. The way their children played together and fit into their arms.
These are not simply pictures of a family standing in a beautiful Breckenridge location. They are pieces of Daniel and Alyana’s childhood, preserved exactly as it was.
Letting Go Creates Space for the Real Moments
Parents sometimes arrive at a family session feeling responsible for making sure their children behave, cooperate, and smile. But you don’t have to carry that pressure.
Your children do not need to perform for my camera.
They are allowed to be shy. They are allowed to move. They are allowed to explore, snuggle, laugh too loudly, or need a moment with you. I will gently guide your family when we need it, but some of the best photographs happen when we stop trying to control every detail.
Your job is simply to connect with your kids. Play with them. Chase them. Hold them close. Laugh when things get messy. Let them show me who they really are.
Because the goal is not to create photographs of a perfect family.
The goal is to create honest photographs of your family.
